‘“Fart Pryke in Cule”: The Pictures’

After the publication of Peter Meredith's article in METh 6:1 and Alan Fletcher's in METh 8:2 on the mysterious game of ‘Fart Pryke in Cule’ played by A and B in Fulgens and
Lucres, pictorial evidence of how it might have been played has come to light. Alan Fletcher found a photograph of it being played on shipboard en route for the Cape in 1894, and Malcolm Jones
came up with two misericords of exactly the right date and areas for Medwall, one from St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, and one from Henry VII’s Chapel in Westminster Abbey. (Medwall was
a scholar at Eton between 1475–1480, and a notary at Windsor in 1489.) Jones suggests that there may have been a Flemish source for the design, and Twycross finds a Spanish misericord by Flemish
artists also of the right period. In this joint article, Twycross draws all this evidence together, provides further documentary evidence for the dating, and suggests practical adjustments to the way
in which it was performed in the Joculatores Lancastrienses production of 1984.

‘Prompting in Full View of the Audience: The Groningen Experiment’

This paper examines issues raised by a production of the Towneley
Second Shepherds' Play at the SITM Colloquium, Groningen, Netherlands
in 2001. The purpose of the production was to examine the statement made
by Richard Carew in his Survey of Cornwall (1602) concerning the
'Ordinary' whose function was to prompt in full view of the audience.
Scenes from the play were played with different emphases in relation to
the prompter's role. International scholars from the audience contribute
their responses to the analysis.
